Project #101001

Description

Quarter-sawn oak and Ubatuba granite carry the craftsman theme in this grand pre-civil war home. Worn-looking flax-colored island and desk cabinetry relax the look a bit.

Specifications

Several doors in this room help in function as the nerve center of the home, but leave mostly short sections of wall for cabinetry, appliances, etc. This necessarily segments the various work stations, letting us dress each oth them up a bit in period-style detail - with sink area and cook-top area each able to show full symmetry.

With sink section too short to include a dishwasher, we were able to sneak one into the nearby island. ...not the ideal spot, but better than no dishwasher, and this left the sink area a bit "older" looking without this appliance in view.

Thoughts from the customer...

In the design of our new kitchen our goals were to complement our home, built in 1854, and provide a space that would work for large family gatherings.

The cabinetry is quarter sawn oak similar to that in the adjoining dining room which was renovated in the 1880s. Kitchen cabinets are set in independent expanses of 7 feet or less like kitchens in older homes. This was Mark's idea.

The large island provides a wonderful serving area for buffets meals and the kitchen overlooking a flower garden is a favorite gathering place for visitors. We are happy we decided not to put the cooktop or sink on the island.

The kitchen is a cook's delight. The layout saves steps and the cabinets contain many convenient features: vertical tray holders, sliding shelves, a mixer stand, a spice holder, broom closet, etc. The Fisher Paykel appliances are the best. No longer is baking a guessing game.

The desk in the corner of the kitchen was another of our desires. It is out of the way and one of our favorite parts of the kitchen.

Thanks to MArk and everybody at Someone's in the Kitchen for a great kitchen.
